When Graham Swift's novel "A Feast Day" was published in 2017, it stormed the bestseller lists. England, 1924. Maid Jane has been given the day off by her masters, the Nivens, to celebrate Mother's Day. Joyfully excited, she cycles out into the spring sunshine to see her lover Paul. After many clandestine meetings and hidden messages, this is now to be their last date, for Paul is soon to be married in keeping with his status. Jane is allowed to walk through the main door for the first time, only to sink straight into his bed, as the family including servants have flown out. When Paul finally sets off for his engagement party, Jane - completely inspired by the passionate act of love - wanders alone and naked through the spacious manor house, unaware of the fateful turn this special festive day has in store.
