Article - Marc Perrenoud Trio: Vielschichtig swingend
The Geneva pianist Marc Perrenoud has been convincing for many years with his velvety touch, wealth of ideas and stylistic continuity. For twelve years his virtuoso, elegant and powerful playing has been supported by the Freiburg bassist Marco Müller and the Lausanne drummer Cyril Regamey. The three function perfectly as a unit, "play" with each other, do without egocentric navel-gazing and define themselves solely through their position as musicians.
Despite complex harmonies and sophisticated rhythms, their playing radiates an impressive lightness. How well the three musicians know and respect each other can also be experienced live: By letting each other free spaces and challenging each other, an extraordinary, musical, partly furious dynamic is created, which is also immediately compared to a balladesque blues by a journalist with the term "ambient Debussy".
Perrenoud's nimble and fiery virtuosity he owes to his background with classical training. But he is also a rhythmically multi-layered improviser with infectious joy of playing and intimate reference to swinging jazz tradition, but also with much pleasure in surprise - of himself and of his listeners.
The trio's fifth CD (Neuklang) will be released in spring 2020. At Tastentage Klosters, the audience will thus be able to enjoy the brand-new repertoire of a trio with thirteen years of joint playing experience.
