Spirited Rose Gooding has little in common with pious Edith Swan, except that they are neighbours in the English seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s. One day, Edith and other residents of the town begin to receive obscene letters, and suspicion immediately falls on Rose. Scotland Yard investigates and Rose is even in danger of losing custody of her daughter. As the scandalous letters continue to haunt the town, only policewoman Gladys Moss suspects that something is wrong and that Rose may not be the culprit after all...
